Hey!

Quick update from today.

After having a meeting with the client today about the 20 images supplied I have been told that they are very happy and will be offering further photography jobs throughout the UTC business.

VERY HAPPY indeed!

Unfortunaltly though I will not be able to share these images with you due to legal reasons.

Hey!!

A month has now gone by with no post I do apologise but I have been extremely busy.

Within the last month I have been to the Sydney Mardi Gra capturing the life and colour of the event in all its glory, and recently this week Thursday in fact I photographed the UTC President Bill Brown when he was flown in from the USA for a corporate event. This was my FIRST payed photographers job. I was honored with being given the opportunity to photograph such a high ranking person within such a large global company.

The client now has 7 images at this stage from the event with about 10-20 more yet to be processed and a deadline of Tuesday 29th March. The client is happy with the 7 images delivered so far, which is great!

I will be delivering the images High Resolution of 300dpi to the client on a CD hopefully Monday which will mean a day early.

I will keep you guys posted.

Teenage Paparazzo - FILM REVIEW + Weeks in Review

Hey,

First of all I do apoligise that their was no update last week but hopefully things should be back on track.
On Sunday the 6th February post I mentioned that I may be doing studio work at TAFE and in fact that did happen. It was my first time that I had ever stepped into a studio and so I was a bit apprehensive at first but it was a interesting experience although I am not sure weather I would go into that area myself, I do seem to prefer natural light over flash although that may be because I dont yet own a off camera flash?
We shot product namely Shampoo & Conditioner.... which can be seen below and on Flickr
2 softboxes off camera left & right with white card behind the bottles was used.

I am enjoying TAFE although it is a heavy schedule and not getting much time to get out and shoot for myself at the momment, hopefully this changes.... As we continue to learn "the natural way" using grey cards etc with Andre, Jane our other teacher seems to believe in photoshop quite largely and apparently is going to teach us image manipulation..... which I dont really believe in fully but it is part of the process and will take away only what is necessary in learning the digital darkroom although it is one extreme to the next (Jane believes in photoshop & Andre believes as I do small improvements are the way).
We are learning Colour Theory at the momment with Jane & continue to learn lighting with Andre.

Anyway now we move onto the movie review of Teenage Paparazzo which was recently on Foxtels On Demand Channel.
Directed by HBO, Arena & SBS Star of "Entourage" Adrian Grenier the film/documentary follows the story of a 14 year old paparazzo by the name of Austin Visschedyk as he photographs celebrities like Paris Hilton on the streets. Adrian a star himself wanted to learn what it was like on the other side of the camera and what the excitement was with photographing celebrities like himself, so this follows how he turned the cameras onto the paparazzi.

AN EXCITING WEEK..... TAFE & PUBLISHED IMAGES IN LOCAL PAPER

Hey!

It is that day of the week again and what a exciting week it has been too!
Starting this week was the first days of TAFE for the year, 3 hrs a day for 3 days in succession (Monday, Tuesday & Wednesday) Monday was Techniques with Andre Morawski , Tuesday was Lighting with Andre & Wednesday was Colour with Jane (surname unknown at this stage) all specialists in their field.
Andre has told us that we will be doing Studio work as well which I am looking forward to as I have never even stepped foot into a photographic studio before.

Thursday was a bad day at my day job but all was well by the afternoon as to my suprise after picking up the local paper from my front lawn I have discovered that 2 of my images from the Bankstown Lunar Festival have been published in The Torch Newspaper!!

Week Gone & Week Ahead

Hey!

This week was a good one on Monday I enrolled at Campbelltown TAFE Campus in PhotoImaging Cert IV Course. The course starts THIS week 7th Feb thats tomorrow evening I am very excited about this.

Last time I mentioned that I submitted images to the local paper from Australia Day activites, unfortunately they were not published this time around but that doesn't mean I don't stop trying. I will now put these up on flickr for you to see.

With the extreme heat & humity this week in Sydney reaching 42C my camera has not been out and about with due to concerns of damaging my equipment, this will change as temperatures drop.

Anyways,

It was only a quick update this week I will let you know how TAFE goes......

An Eventful Week...

Hi Everyone,

This week certainly was a eventful one with both Australia Day (26th January) and the Bankstown Lunar New Year Festival of 2011 being the highlights.

On Wednesday was Australia Day (26th January) I headed down to Garrison Point, Georges Hall and attended the Bankstown Australia Day Awards and Citizenship Ceremony which started at 8am. Bankstown Council ran the event and it was done very well as it was fully catered, great for all the hungry new Australians that attended.
I of course photographed the event all while the local media (Canterbury-Bankstown Express and The Torch Newspapers) were also photographing it. I used my new Canon 70-200mm f2.8 L Lens to stand back and get some images while the media was up close and personal with their wide angle lenses and flash units.
I loved it I went armed with my 10-22mm Canon Wide Angle as well as a notepad, a pen and business cards.
My reason for the notepad and business cards???? Well I had rang the local papers earlier in the week and asked what their requirements were for me to submit images.... I was told 1MB image, high resolution, Name, Suburb of person I photograph.
Well while I stood back photographing from a distance after a while I was approached with the question from a lady asking me where am I from??? I of course answered with the name of my suburb....... as you would....
"I am just a local photographer just getting some shots" which I didnt think much of it until she introduced herself as a contact from the local council!!!! OMG!!! was what I was thinking! I gave her one of my business cards as well....... Well I spoke to her for a while and it eventuated in me being nearly onstage! I was able to get nice and close right next to the people from the local papers.
I have now sent 5 images from the day to the local paper with the hope of at least one being published.......

Just Yesterday (Saturday 29th Jan) I headed to the Bankstown Lunar New Year Festival and that was yet another great morning this time I photographed the festival as much as I could......
Again I was approached while I was shooting images this time by a local giving me their email address on the back of a scap piece of paper..... Saying to me "If you get some good images send them to me" amongst the noise of firecrackers going of I couldnt quite hear her but again she worked for a society I think but I dont know which one..... I have sent images to her (copyrighted of course).
Then just as I was walking back to my car I saw a lady I wanted to photograph her name was Thi from
Bankstown I approached her as she looked through some books at a local bookstall and asked her "Excuse me would I be able to get a photo of you?" which she was ok with so I asked her her name, suburb and her email address so I could send her the photo which she was more than happy to give me. I have now sent the image on which can be seen below.
Anyway thats it for this week!!! Tomorrow is enrol in TAFE day!!!

The Greats (Portrait Photographer) Annie Leibovitz

Annie Leibovitz

Another week, another great. This week its Annie Leibovitz, born October 2nd 1949 in Westbury - Connecticut she was one of six children.
She enrolled at the San Francisco Art Institute in 1967 where she originally studied painting, she developed a love of photography.
In 1970 she applied for a job with Rolling Stone Magazine impressed with her portfolio the editor offered her a job as staff photographer. Within 2 years of being employed she was promoted to Chief Photographer, which she held for 10 years.
She became portrait photographer to the stars, she photographed, John Lennon with his wife Yoko Ono (seen here).
In 1983 Annie left the Rolling Stone Magazine and started working for Vanity Fair and since she started working for them she has shot many celebrity portraits including a controversial image of Demi Moore (seen here) when she was 7 months pregnant with her daughter,
Whoopi Goldberg submerged in a bathtub of milk (here).

At the moment you can see Annie's work at a current exhibition in Sydney at the MCA (Museum Of Contemporary Art) which ends on the 27th March 2011 - Details Are Here

Passion!!

Where does it lay in the field?

This is the question which often plagues my mind..............

Specialisation? Can I focus on one?

These are the questions going through my mind as I photograph the world around me.

My interest is so broad, I like all forms of photography..........

I like all genres for different reasons.

1) Portraits - Showing the subjects inner self, capturing emotion, showing the beauty of the person in the

frame.

2) Landscape - Showing nature at its best, the emotion felt and capturing that in the image.

Making sure to portray that to your audience.

3) Photojournalism - Documenting what is happening and portraying a story through the power of the

image.

So, Where to from here?

That is the question.......

The Greats: James Nachtwey (Photojournalist)

This week on "The Greats" I tell you the story of legendary photojournalist James Nachtwey.
James was one of the many photographers who photographed the September 11 tragedy, with James you truly see the story through his lens.
He studied art history and political science at Dartmouth College in Massachusetts.
Images from the Vietnam War had a strong impact on him which is the reason he started in photography.

In 1976 he started working as a newspaper photographer in New Mexico and in 1980 he moved to New York where he began a career as a freelance magazine photographer.

He has now worked with Time Magazine since 1984, and has travelled to many countries covering war and political stories.

James Nachtwey a truly moving Photographer!

Happy New Year!

I wanted to wish everyone a Happy New Year as I have only recently got back from Nowra on the South Coast of NSW.

My Thoughts go out to the people in Queensland and Country NSW who have been affected by the recent devastating floods.
24 Towns have been flooded affecting 200,000 people with a estimated damage bill at the time of posting $5 billion.

The Greats: Ansel Adams

I wanted to start a new section today called "The Greats" thats right as the title suggests it is all about the greats in the photography field.
This time its Ansel Adams born in 1902 in San Francisco this "Great" was the best of his time.
He grew in a house set among the sand dunes of the Golden Gate. When he was four the great earthquake of 1906 threw him to the ground and badly broke his nose distinctly marking him for life.
In 1907 just a year later the family fortune collapsed in the financial panic and his father worked hard for the rest of his life trying to recoup.
Ansels mother under constant stress from her husband not being able to recover the Adams fortune had a large impact on Ansel.
Although his father encouraged him and supported him.

Ansel struggled through school and in later life he noted that he might have been diagnosed as hyperactive. There is also the distinct possibility that he may have suffered from dyslexia.

At the age of 12 he taught himself how to play the piano and read music he then took lessons and started to pursue a career in music.
For years he continued his pursuit of a music career.

Then in 1916 he visited Yosemite National Park and fell in love with it.
His father gave him a Kodak Brownie box camera during that stay and he took his first photographs and loved it, He hiked, climbed, and explored, gaining self-esteem and self-confidence. In 1919 he joined the Sierra Club and spent the first of four summers in Yosemite Valley. He became friends with many of the club's leaders.

The Clubb was one of the most vital parts in his success as a photographer.
Every Summer the club held a month long high trip
1927 was one of the most important years for Ansel, he made his first fully visualized photograph, Monolith, the Face of Half Dome, and took his first High Trip.
But more importantly he came under the influence of Albert M. Bender, a San Francisco insurance magnate and patron of arts and artists.
Albert was the one person that set about putting in the motion the publication of Ansels 1st Portfolio.

From then on Ansel rose to the top and is still today one of the most famous photographers.
